Orion’s Hidden Fiery Ribbon
Viewing at sub-millimeter wavelengths, the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) in Chile revealed this new image of cosmic dust grains in the Orion Molecular Cloud complex (The bright region at the upper right is the Orion Nebula - M42)
The dust grains normally block light, but with these wavelengths they shine (Orange in this image) due to them being a few degrees above absolute zero. Cooler objects give off radiation at longer wavelengths (like red stars) and hotter objects give off shorter wavelengths (blue stars).
